Adelanto, meaning “progress” in Spanish, was founded in 1915 by E.H. Richardson, the inventor of the Hotpoint electric iron. He sold his patent and purchased land for $75,000, aiming to create one of Southern California’s first planned communities. Initially, the area thrived with deciduous fruit orchards, gaining fame for its fresh fruit and cider. However, during the Great Depression, many orchards were replaced by poultry ranches. In 1941, the nearby Victorville Army Air Field was established, later renamed George Air Force Base in 1950, influencing the region’s development. Adelanto incorporated as a city in 1970 and became a charter city in 1992.
