History

Spanish and Mexican Eras

In 1818, the Spanish governor of California granted a 35-square-mile area known as Rancho San Antonio to Luis Peralta. This land included present-day Alameda. In 1842, Peralta divided the property among his four sons, with Antonio Maria receiving the portion encompassing Alameda and much of Oakland.

Post-Conquest Era

Following the Mexican-American War, the area began to develop rapidly. In 1853, residents chose the name “Alameda,” Spanish for “grove of poplar trees” or “tree-lined avenue,” reflecting the region’s lush vegetation. The city was incorporated in 1872 and became one of California’s first charter cities in 1884, allowing it to choose its own form of government.

Modern Era

Originally a peninsula, Alameda became an island city in 1902 with the completion of a tidal canal, enhancing its status as a shipping port and leading to industrial expansion along the estuary. The city’s rich architectural heritage includes many Victorian homes, contributing to its historic charm.
