The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was first built in 1803 to protect ships from the dangerous Diamond Shoals. These shifting sandbars caused many shipwrecks just off the coast. In 1870, a taller lighthouse replaced the original, standing 210 feet high. It became the tallest brick lighthouse in North America.
As the shoreline moved, the lighthouse faced damage from erosion. In 1999, workers moved it more than 2,900 feet inland. This move saved it from falling into the sea. Today, you can walk the grounds and climb to the top for sweeping ocean views. The climb has 257 steps, but the view is worth it.
