The History of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina

Ocean Isle Beach, located in Brunswick County, North Carolina, has a rich and diverse history. From its early days as a home to indigenous people to becoming a beloved beach town, its story is one of change, resilience, and vision.

Early Inhabitants and Indigenous Culture

Long before modern development, the area now known as Ocean Isle Beach was home to the Cape Fear Indians. These Native American groups settled the region as early as 10,000 BC. They were skilled farmers and hunters who lived in harmony with the land. The Cape Fear Indians used the area’s natural resources wisely, shaping the wilderness into a sustainable environment for generations. Their knowledge of agriculture and deep connection to the land laid the foundation for early life along the coast.

Arrival of European Settlers

By the late 1700s, European settlers began arriving in the region. They saw potential in the land for farming, trade, and settlement. The area was originally known as Hale Beach, named after the nearby Hale Swamp. Over time, settlers transformed the land, introducing new crops and building homes and small communities. This marked a major cultural and environmental shift for the region.

The Vision of Odell Williamson

In the 1930s, developers started exploring the Atlantic coast, looking for ideal locations to develop resort communities. One of them, Odell Williamson, saw promise in Hale Beach. Drawn to the beauty where the Intracoastal Waterway met the Atlantic Ocean, he began buying land from local families.

Using his position in the North Carolina legislature, Odell helped push forward both the Hale Beach development and broader growth in Brunswick County. By 1949, he and his wife Virginia decided to rename the area. Virginia gave it the name Ocean Isle Beach, inspired by the island’s stunning ocean views.

Early Growth and Development

In 1950, Odell built a small airstrip at the island’s east end, allowing easier travel to and from Raleigh and Charleston. That same year, he and his partner Manlon Gore built a four-car ferry, making the island more accessible. This ferry became a key route for tourists and developers. Today, the road leading to the ferry site is known as Shallotte Boulevard.

Soon after, beach cottages, hotels, and businesses began appearing along the island. Ocean Isle Beach quickly gained attention as a peaceful, scenic getaway. Visitors spread the word, and the town began to grow.

Building Bridges and a Town

By 1959, a swinging high-rise bridge replaced the ferry, connecting the island to the mainland across the Intracoastal Waterway. That year, Ocean Isle Beach was officially incorporated as a town. Odell Williamson became its first mayor, and in 1961, the town completed its first city hall.

As the 1960s progressed, the community expanded rapidly. The first hotel, Ocean Isle Inn, opened during this time, followed by restaurants, shops, and recreational spaces. The town also built its first golf course in 1960, attracting even more visitors.

Hurricane Hazel’s Destruction

On October 15, 1954, Hurricane Hazel devastated the island. It was one of the most powerful hurricanes to ever hit the East Coast. At the time, only ten full-time residents lived on the island. Sadly, the storm took the lives of several people, including members of the Register family and six visitors from High Point, NC.

As the storm approached, most families evacuated. However, some chose to stay, seeking shelter on Gause’s Hill, the island’s highest point. The hurricane ripped through the island, flattening homes and reshaping the land. Of the 41 homes on the island, only two remained standing.

Despite this tragedy, the community came together. Survivors and residents worked to rebuild the island from the ground up. The losses were heavy, but the spirit of Ocean Isle Beach remained strong.

A Community Rebuilt

After Hurricane Hazel, rebuilding efforts moved quickly. With support from locals and visionaries like Odell Williamson, Ocean Isle Beach not only recovered but grew stronger. More homes were built. Businesses reopened. New families moved in, and visitors kept coming.

Throughout the 1950s and 60s, the town’s population steadily increased. It transformed from a quiet beach getaway to a thriving community with its own identity.

Legacy and Modern Growth

Today, Ocean Isle Beach stands as a tribute to its past and a celebration of its future. From the Cape Fear Indians to the dreamers who saw potential in a small barrier island, its history is filled with strength and hope. The community’s ability to rebuild after disaster, welcome newcomers, and honor its roots shows the deep pride held by its residents.

The story of Ocean Isle Beach is not just about buildings or beaches—it’s about people. Their dreams, hard work, and love for this special place continue to shape the island’s future, making it one of North Carolina’s most cherished coastal towns.
